About Us

Doug Hood Mining Ltd is a privately owned New Zealand company specialising in civil engineering earthworks, opencast mining, quarry development, and plant hire.

The aim of this website is to create an understanding of where we’ve been, where we’re going and the shared value we create along the way.

With a comprehensive and well maintained fleet we provide contract civil, mining and quarrying services, and wet and dry plant hire.

In Projects and News & Info you can read in depth about our past and present work or continue reading below for a brief summary of the last two decades of work.

We continue to work at Stockton Mine stripping overburden and other civil works.

In support of our mining work we continue to upgrade our fleet, in 2025 purchasing:
a new Caterpillar D9 bringing our bulldozer fleet to five.
two new Volvo articulated dump trucks bringing our A45G fleet to six.

In May 2019 we concluded a 1.5M bcm overburden stripping project at SN14 block, Stockton Mine for BT Mining Ltd.

In June 2018 we concluded our component of the Sumner Road geotechnical risk mitigation project in Christchurch requiring the excavation of a 15m wide by 400m long rockfall catchbench between the crater rim bluffs and Sumner Road, and other corridor improvements including excavation for road realignment. The road reopened on March 29th 2019.

In December 2017 we recommenced a civil earthworks project at Stockton Mine to continue raising the embankment on a coal fines storage dam halted mid-2017 due to inclement weather. This work concluded in early 2018.

Between November 2011 and February 2014 we green-fielded and operated Reddale Opencast Coal Mine for Solid Energy on the West Coast of the South Island, excavating 1.75M bcm of overburden and 193,000 tonne of coal.

From December 2003 to October 2009 the company was principal mining & civil contractor at Stockton Mine, excavating 25.5M bcm of overburden and 9.1M tonne of coal utilising 3.6M labour hours.
