Doug Hood Mining

The Company

Doug Hood Mining Ltd has established itself as one of New Zealand’s largest and most successful opencast mining, quarrying and civil engineering contractors.

Our vision is “To be acknowledged by the New Zealand mining and civil construction sectors as the preferred service provider and by current and prospective employees as the preferred employer”.

This focus empowers the company to complete each project on time and to specification, thereby meeting and often exceeding contracted expectations.

Established by the Late Doug Hood in 1953 and incorporated in 1966, the company was initially focused on agricultural land development before progressing to large earthworks contracts including hydro-electric power projects from the 1970’s and opencast mining projects from the 1980’s.

The light civil/agricultural contracting division of the business was divested in 2003 as the Company expanded to take advantage of the global demand for energy and mineral commodities.

In summary we have completed nine large gold and coal mining contracts between 1985 and 2021, excavating 76 million bank cubic metres, and civil engineering contracts between 1994 and 2021 valued at $44 million.
