Rangi Hicks, DHML Project Manager for the Sumner Road contract
Doug Hood Mining Ltd (DHML) concluded their component of the Sumner Road project (2016 to 2018) with completion of the rock catchbench above the Sumner Road, road realignment at Windy Point, several bund platforms, and reshaping of the excavated rock stockpile in the Gollans Bay Quarry.
DHML was part of the successful team selected by Christchurch City Council to reopen the Sumner to Lyttelton road near Christchurch. This important link connecting Christchurch City and Lyttelton Port was badly affected by the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes and remained closed for eight years.
The team including DHML, McConnell Dowell, Beca, and Geovert, along with DHML contractors Orica and Inline Drilling, was required to design and complete geotechnical risk mitigation works to facilitate opening the road.

Work completed by DHML included:
1. Site works for the establishment of the site offices at Evans Pass.
2. Construction of a sediment pond and rock-roll bund in the Gollans Bay Quarry adjacent Evans Pass.
3. Sheeting, bunding and installing sediment check dams and tanks along the Sumner Road before use as a haulroad between the catchbench and the Evans Pass tiphead.
4. Excavation of the platform for the F & G bunds at the terminus of the two valleys west of the catchbench.
5. Cutting into Windy Point corner adjacent the port.
6. Excavating the 400m long by 15m wide catchbench, with blast hole drilling by Inline Drilling and blast design, detonation, presplit and bulk explosives and shotfirer supplied by Orica NZ.
7. Hauling excavated material up to the tiphead at Evans Pass above Gollans Bay Quarry.
8. Dumping hauled material on the tiphead then dozer and loader push into the Gollans Bay Quarry stockpile.
9. Reshaping the stockpiled material that was excavated from the catchbench above Sumner Road and tipped into the Gollans Bay Quarry via the tiphead at Evans Pass. This work was engineered to increase the stability of the final landform in the floor of the quarry.
