Weavers Opencast Coal Mine, Huntly, North Island
July 31, 1993
This $40M contract for Coal Corporation of NZ, completed in 1993, required 11M bcm of overburden stripped over a 3 1/2 year period.
The contract also included the construction of a 60m engineered earth dam to retain unconsolidated saturated clay and sand overburden.
A fleet of 3 x 150 tonne capacity rigid dump trucks and a 350 tonne face shovel were imported specifically for this contract.
Overburden stripping included difficult moisture sensitive materials (quaternary clays & Waikato coal measures / fire clay) and underground workings.
Weavers Mine was located adjacent to three housing subdivisions and required water discharge into a nearby lake. Consequently environmental standards were high ensuring minimal impact on the lake and local residents.
Despite the difficult ground conditions this contract was completed within the contracted period and to the client’s satisfaction.
