Geothermal power station site works

DHML was involved in the site development for New Zealand’s first major private geothermal power station, Poihipi Road geothermal station, built for Mercury Geotherm Limited, a joint venture between Mr Alistair McLachlan and his interests of Taupo and Mercury Energy Limited, which was sold to Contact Energy in 1997.

The contract, started in May and finished in October 1995, required construction of a platform and associated structures entailing the excavation and placement of 1M m3 of ash (40%) and pumice (60%).

DHML received significant public relations coverage for this unique project that achieved completion of site earthworks on time despite adverse winter weather.
