Golden Cross Mine rehabilitation, drainage and closure, Waihi, North Island
December 31, 2001
In 1997 DHML began a 5 year association with Coeur Gold at the Golden Cross Mine, Waihi, south eastern Coromandel, New Zealand
This contract involved extensive bulk earthworks totalling 2.8M m3 comprising overburden stripping, ore extraction, landslide remediation, rehabilitation, and drainage to strict environmental controls.
To achieve the stringent environmental and safety requirements a Contract Management Plan was developed in accordance with the Company’s management system and the contract documents.
Programming and management of the various work activities was a major challenge with the site’s moisture sensitive clays and heavy rainfall. All work was carried out in a highly sensitive forest park environment with high rainfall.
Acid producing rock required zone bund placement with high geotechnical and quality constraints.
The work was completed ahead of schedule, to budget and to the required standards. The total value of the final work was $18M.
In addition to accolades from the Client and Environment Waikato, the company was awarded Caltex Contractor of The Year for the closure works.
